Homeschooling parents sometimes struggle to come up with a homeschooling schedule that is simple and organized. Making time to fit everything in without feeling overwhelmed can be difficult.
The following tips may help you create a homeschooling schedule that works.
Make a List of Academic Subjects - The first thing you should do is to make a list of the homeschooling subjects that you need to teach your child. Write them down in the order of priority. For example, if your child excels in history, but needs to work on math skills, list math before history.
Make a List of Enrichment Subjects - With this list, write down all of the enrichment subjects you teach your child in order of priority. Enrichment homeschooling subjects include anything non-academic, such as arts and crafts.
Make a List of Your Child's Activities - Make a list of your child's weekly activities, including sports practice, music lessons, club meetings, etc. Include the day and time of the activity.
Set a Time Limit for Each Subject - Look over your lists for academic subjects and enrichment subjects, setting a time limit for each subject. Keep the subject in mind when assigning a homeschooling time limit. For example, from the above example, you would want to schedule more time for math than for history.
Fill Out Index Cards - Every index card equals fifteen minutes (or the amount of time you choose). Write the homeschooling topic on the center of an index card. For every fifteen minutes you plan to spend on that subject, fill out another card. For example, if you plan to work on spelling for a half-hour, write “spelling” on two of the cards so the time adds up to a half-hour. In addition, fill out cards with the word “break” to signify a brief snack or bathroom break. Fill out a card for each of your child's activities including the day and time they take place.
Arrange the Cards Into a Schedule - Lay the cards out on a table or on the floor and arrange them into a schedule. You may teach your child some subjects every day. Other subjects may be studied once or twice per week. Include time for breaks and schedule in your child's activities. In addition, include playtime for your child and planning time for yourself in your homeschooling day.
Write it Down - Once you have arranged the cards into a homeschooling schedule that you like, write it down. Do not risk the cards being moved around. Once you write down the schedule, post it so your child and spouse can see it. If everyone is educated about the schedule, everyone will always know what to expect.
